Clean Industry Projects Concentrate in China
Manufacturers in hard-to-abate sectors should watch power costs as clean plants compete with data centres for electricity.
Updated on Nov. 4, 2026 in Manufacturing

China secured $45 billion in clean industry investment in 2026, and accounts for 49% of clean industrial plants operating or under construction. Operators across manufacturing sectors such as sustainable aviation fuel, methanol and clean ammonia are among those most directly affected by the pace of decarbonisation projects.
Why it matters
The concentration of investment and plant construction in China signals where new low-carbon industrial capacity, and the supply chains built around it, are forming. For manufacturers in hard-to-abate sectors, access to low-cost renewable power is becoming a decisive factor in whether a clean production project can get off the ground.
The tracker counts 36 record final investment decisions over the past 12 months, 23 of them in China, against a worldwide pipeline of 189 financed or built projects (93 in China) and 838 announced or in development. The announced pipeline is projected to require roughly 3,500 terawatt-hours of electricity per year, about 12% of current global power demand.
The players
Mission Possible Partnership
An initiative that promotes decarbonisation projects in hard-to-abate industries worldwide and publishes the Global Project Tracker on industrial decarbonisation.
China
The country securing the largest share of clean industry investment and holding 49% of clean industrial plants operating or under construction.
The details
Clean industrial projects such as sustainable aviation fuel, methanol and clean ammonia are leading sectors in this build-out. These plants need large, steady electricity supplies, and they are competing for that power with the rapidly expanding data centre sector. Securing low-cost renewable power is therefore central to whether many low-carbon industrial facilities can be financed and built.
Timeline
China's $45 billion in clean industry investment was secured in 2026.
The record 36 final investment decisions were reached over the past 12 months.
The global investment tracker report was published on 4 November 2026.
Market Landscape
The Mission Possible Partnership's Global Project Tracker shows China accounting for 23 of 36 record final investment decisions, a sharp concentration in one country. Sustainable aviation fuel, methanol and clean ammonia are leading the sector mix, pointing to where competitive positioning in clean industrial capacity is forming.
Manufacturers in energy-intensive sectors should track electricity sourcing and pricing as clean production projects compete with data centres for power. Procurement teams evaluating low-carbon inputs such as sustainable aviation fuel, methanol and clean ammonia should monitor where these projects are being built.
The takeaway
Operators should treat access to affordable renewable electricity as a core input cost when planning any clean production investment. Keep a watch on the Mission Possible Partnership's Global Project Tracker to follow which projects reach final investment decision next.
